Equitrans may have to clear more regulatory hurdles to obtain a key water crossing permit to complete the Mountain Valley Pipeline project, according to Pittsburgh Business Times.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recommended to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that plans for the project may not be sufficient to comply with the Clean Water Act and that it shouldn’t grant a the permit until changes are made.
EPA Wetlands Branch Chief Jeffery D. Lapp recommended pipeline permits not be approved until Equitrans modified its application, including employing different water crossing methods as well as having a restoration plan to restore the temporary impacts of pipeline construction. While work is continuing elsewhere on the route, the crossings of water and the Jefferson National Forest are key to finishing the pipeline.
