The number of drilling rigs in the United States continued to plummet, Kallanish Energy reports.
The total dropped by 17 in the count released last Friday by Baker Hughes, the Texas-based well services company.
There were 301 rigs at work in the U.S., down from 318 on May 22.
A year ago, there were 984 rigs at work. That is a drop of 683 rigs.
It was the 11th straight week of declines in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the oil price rout.
The Baker Hughes count is considered a good indicator of future oil and gas wells that are being drilled and completed.
Baker Hughes said the number of oil rigs was 222, down 15 from the previous week’s 237, and natural gas rigs dropped by 2 to 77.
A year ago, the U.S. had 800 oil rigs and 184 gas rigs.
The total number of rigs in Canada dropped by one from 21 to 20.
The number of gas rigs in Canada held steady at 13. The number of oil rigs in Canada dropped back down to 7.
A year ago, Canada had 41 gas rigs and 44 oil rigs at work.
