Natural gas news from a hundred years ago offers great perspective for discussing one of the cleanest sources of energy available then and still today.
I thought it might be fun and illuminating to look back 100 years ago at what was happening with natural gas. It is eye opening, given all we’ve learned over the last century. There is, indeed, little new under the sun, as our stories repeatedly demonstrate. Natural Gas – 100 Years Ago Today, March 3, 1923. Read our 100-year old news items on the subjects of natural gas deals, power hungry pols, Balkanization, Tappan gas stoves and the modern convenience of natural gas!
What A Bargain!
The Winfield Natural Gas Company was selling gas for 51¢ per thousand cubic feet in 1923. That’s $8.92 in current dollars and at the beginning of the Biden administration in February, 2021 the average retail price in Kansas was $7.17. So, it was a better bargain in early 2021 than a century earlier.

Then, things changed…
Of course, we all know what’s happened under Biden—a war on natural gas, roaring inflation and green energy subsidization that are, every day, putting us further into an Energiewende trap of Germany’s invention.
So, Pinchot Wanted Superpowers, Then?
Gifford Pinchot, perhaps Pennsylvania’s most revered former governor, was a power-hungry pol, as it turns out. He was a protege of Teddy Roosevelt, of course, a “progressive” megalomaniac, so it’s hardly surprising.

Sadly, much of old Gifford’s vision was realized with an electrical grid that is now greatly threatened by subsidization and overbuilding of renewables as compared to dispatchable energy sources, which is what happens whenever government trapes through the door. And, then there is the corrupt DRBC, of course.
Balkanization Is Not A New Word and It’s Still Stupid
“Balkanization” is a word very much in use today to describe the politics of tribalism and isolation. Read down this 100-year editorial and you’ll see Pennsylvania actually passed a law prohibiting the export of natural gas out of the state. Fortunately, it was declared unconstitutional but many folks are still, to this day, promoting the same insane idea.

It’s also spread to our entire culture here in the U.S. as, for example, cities have turned against rural areas, viewing the latter’s occupants as hicks who don’t know what’s good for them. We see this in every largely urban state and that’s why so many of them are failing (California, Illinois, New York, etc.).
When Gas Stoves Were A Blessing, Not A Biden Curse
The advertisement says it all…

Yes, gas stoves were a blessing, but now the masters behind the buffoon are telling us they’ve got to go to kick up the climate scam up a notch fight global warming.
The Simple Truth About Natural Gas
Yes…

And, it’s still convenient and modern.
