Natural gas news from a hundred years ago offers great perspective for discussing one of the cleanest sources of energy available then and still today.

I thought it might be fun and illuminating to look back 100 years ago at what was happening with natural gas. It is eye opening, given all we’ve learned over the last century. There is, indeed, little new under the sun, as our stories repeatedly demonstrate. Natural Gas – 100 Years Ago Today, January 27, 1923. Read our 100-year old news items on the subjects of spirits that burn bright, courage and comfort, RadiantFire for every purpose, liquid gold, exploding water wells and the hustle.

Spirits of A Different Kind Burn Bright and Vigorous!

Natural gas was once thought to be spiritual it turns out:

Well, it’s certain a blessing even if it isn’t spiritual!

Courage and Comfort Go Together!

Personally, I would never be comfortable living in a city, but for those who like density and rubbing elbows without relief…

“More heat for less money”with “Models for Every Purpose”says it all, doesn’t it?

If Josh Fox Had Done His Homework…

Yes, if the charlatan muckraker had done any decent amount of research he would have found this and realized water wells produced natural gas from methane migration too.

That assumes, though, that Fox intended to produce the facts and not a ridiculous piece of propaganda, which, of course, Gasland was.

Was O.V. Morrison Selling Oil and Natural Gas or Paper?

One has to wonder if this wasn’t an early version of the classic hustle:

10 Feb 1923, Sat Star-Gazette (Elmira, New York) Newspapers.comnatural gas history

Something tells me O.V. Morrison viewed the good people of Elmira as suckers but, of course, there was natural gas in the Southern Tier of New York, too, so somehow I suspect he didn’t sell that many packages up north.
