The volume of working gas injected into underground storage in the most recent Energy Information Administration survey topped 100 billion cubic feet for the third consecutive week.
At May 24, 1.87 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of working gas was stored, up 114 Bcf from the week-earlier total of 1.75 Tcf, Kallanish Energy calculates.
The latest storage total was up 156 Bcf, or 9.1%, from the year-ago total of 1.71 Tcf, but was down 257 Bcf, or 12.1%, from the five-year average of 2.21 Tcf.

All five regions EIA divides the Lower 48 U.S. states into when tracking working natural gas, reported a week-to-week increase in product underground. Four of the five total were up double-digit amounts.
The biggest week-to-week increase was in the Midwest, up 35 Bcf, or 9.6%, to 399 Bcf, from 364 Bcf. The Midwest total was up 88 Bcf, or 28.3%, from the year-ago total of 311 Bcf, but was down 45 Bcf, or 10.1%, from the five-year average of 444 Bcf.
Close behind the Midwest in terms of working gas added to storage were the South Central and East regions, up 31 Bcf and 30 Bcf, respectively, to 793 Bcf and 383 Bcf.
The latest South Central total was up 49 Bcf, or 6.6%, from the year-ago total of 744 Bcf, but was down 100 Bcf, or 11.2%, from the five-year average of 893 Bcf.
The most recent East region working-gas total of 383 Bcf, was up 59 Bcf, or 18.2%, from the year-ago total of 324 Bcf, but was down 14 Bcf, or 3.5%, from the five-year average of 397 Bcf.
