Malaysia’s state oil and gas company, Petronas, said Thursday it has entered Myanmar’s gas market delivering its first two liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes to CNTIC VPower, Kallanish Energy reports.
The successful exports mark a “new era” in the growth of LNG demand in the South East Asian region, said Petronas LNG CEO Abdul Aziz Othman. “With Myanmar as the latest nation to adopt LNG as a form of cleaner energy, Petronas looks forward to being a long-term partner and supplier.”
Petronas sold 190,000 cubic meters of LNG in two cargoes loaded at its LNG complex in Bintulu, Sarawak. The volume was sold on a free-on-board (FOB) basis, with CNTIC VPower Global loading the fuel onboard of the tanker Golar Kelvin. The cargoes were delivered on May 7 and June 3.
The companies are working on further deliveries, which will facilitate the growth of their foothold in Myanmar’s fast-growing gas industry, Petronas said.
Also on Thursday, VPower started commercial operations at a 23.3 megawatts (MW) power plant in Kyun Chaung, in the Magway region, Myanmar. The Hong Kong-headquartered power distribution company is a subsidiary of the China National Technical Import & Export Corporation (CNTIC). The Chinese state-owned firm provides overseas EPC services for the power industry in countries such as Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Ghana.
