While the number of new wells drilled in Pennsylvania declined in 2019, more natural gas gas fracked within the state last year than any previous year, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
According to the DEP’s 2019 Oil and Gas Annual Report, last year’s production totaled 6.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from the Marcellus and Utica shale plays. The total topped 6.2 trillion cubic feet in 2018 and continued the upward trend that’s held steady for over a decade.
In 2019, the DEP issued 1,705 drilling permits, compared to 2,149 in 2018. Additionally, only 787 wells were drilled in 2019.
