Pa. Attorney general charges Cabot Oil & Gas for environmental crimes

Pennsylvania Attorney General Joshua David Shapiro is charging Cabot Oil & Gas Company for environmental crimes related to their drilling operations in the Marcellus Shale, according to the Andover Leader.

Cabot’s wells in the region are suspected to be the source of migrating gas that has contaminated drinking water and groundwater. Additionally, the company will face charges for the water well explosion in Dimock, Pennsylvania.

Fifteen criminal counts, nine after recommendations from a grand jury, have been announced against the gas company.

This isn’t the first time Cabot has faced charges over environmental issues. In 2009, the company was fined $120,000 for contaminating drinking water in Pennsylvania
