All recycling in the United States, not just plastics recycling, has challenges.
So a group of trade groups and a non-profit are joining together to help residents understand what should and should not go in the recycling bin with a focus on worker and equipment safety.
The Think Twice poster was developed by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, the National Waste and Recycling Association, the Solid Waste Association of North America and the Northeast Recycling Council.
The poster lists a variety of items, including plastic products, that should not be put in recycling containers. They include plastic bags, diapers, wires, hoses and syringes
“Our experiences have shown that education plays a vital role in decreasing contamination and increasing the quality of the recycling stream,” ISRI President Robin Wiener said in a statement. “While the rules for residential recycling vary from community to community there are several common items that cannot be recycled in curbside programs regardless of location.”
The poster can be downloaded through this link.
