Birmingham, Ala. — Birmingham-based Motion Industries Inc., a distributor of maintenance, repair and operation replacement parts, as well as industrial technology solutions, broke ground on an $11.2 million, 104,000-square-foot shop facility in Irondale, Ala.
Company officials and local officials attended the socially-distanced event to mark the first stages of construction, which are underway.
First announced in October 2020, the project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2021 and will create 15 new jobs while retaining 13, according to a Motion news release.
The facility will house Motion’s area fluid power shop, hose and rubber shop, and engineering department. Capabilities will include fluid power component repair and fabrication, power unit fabrication, machining, hose kitting and assembly, and engineering design.
“The main reason for the investment is to strengthen our position and provide the best customer service possible, as our customer base and our company grow,” Motion President Randy Breaux said in the release. “We’re looking forward to the positive impact this operation will have — for our customers, our employees, and our community.”
The construction project is being overseen by Brasfield Gorrie and Graham Co., which handled the company’s recent headquarters renovation.
Motion Industries says it logs annual sales of $6 billion as an industrial distributor of bearings, mechanical power transmission products; electrical and industrial automation components; hose, belting, and gaskets; hydraulic and pneumatic components; process pumps; industrial and safety products; seals and accessories; and material handling products and solutions.
The company serves more than 200,000 customers in the food and beverage, pulp and paper, iron and steel, chemical, mining and aggregate, petrochemical, automotive, semiconductor, wood and lumber, medical, and pharmaceutical markets.
