Flexan developing full-service medical device development

Flexan LLC has introduced a new full-service concept for the development of silicone and thermoplastic medical devices, a move it says will help meet growing demand for these products.

Under the new concept, Lincolnshire, Ill.-based Flexan supports the entire value chain, from product development, prototyping and toolmaking to mass production, quality assurance and logistics. The firm said its focus will be on services and products in micro injection molding and micro lumen extrusion of thermoplastic and silicone medical devices.

The move toward becoming a full-service provider is in anticipation of increasing demand for silicone and plastics medical devices, according to Werner Krau, European commercial leader at Flexan.

Citing a survey by U.S. market research firm Global View Research, the company said it expected global sales of silicone medical devices to reach nearly $600 million by 2025, with an average annual growth rate of 6.6 percent. As a result, Flexan said, OEMs increasingly are “turning to highly specialized contract manufacturers to produce individual components.”

Last year, Flexan acquired Salt Lake City-based IntroMed LLC. The purchase expanded Flexan’s contract manufacturing services for the medical device industry and played a key role in strengthening production and value in medical technology. IntroMed manufactures patent protected sheath introducers used in catheter placements. The firm’s products benefit from a unique movable valve design.
