The U.S. oil and gas rig count increased by 13 rigs during the week ending April 14, bringing the total to 541, according to Hellenic Shipping News. The jump was encouraged by private operators continuing to add vertical rigs in more conventional oil and gas plays.
Oil plays saw the most growth with the rig count increasing by 14 to reach 419 total. Natural gas rigs decreased one to bring the total to 122.
Private E&Ps picked up seven rigs, bringing the total to 140. Additionally, the biggest rig increases occurred outside the major basins in smaller basins where mostly vertical wells are drilled in conventional plays, growing 13 to 123.
