Molder Gary Plastic Packaging Corp. is closing its Bronx, N.Y., plant and moving into 207,000 square feet of a building in Shelton, Conn.
The city’s planning and zoning commission approved the site plan in Shelton on Jan. 26.
The move, reported by the New Haven Register, means about 300 new jobs for the area, Virginia Harger, the commission chairwoman said.
“The facility on Bridgeport Avenue is well suited for its needs, requiring only the installation of some equipment on the outside of the building,” Harger said. “Parking for its employees is more than adequate, and the site is well-situated for access to Route 8 for shipping and receiving purposes.”
In March 2020, Gary Plastic temporarily laid off 300 employees due to “unforeseeable business circumstances prompted by COVID-19,” the March 19 notice to the New York State Department of labor said.
Richard Hellinger, president of Gary Plastic, declined to comment on the move and the layoffs in a phone call with Plastics News.
The employees were represented by IUOE Local 132, according to the notice.
Gary Plastic is an injection molder and blow molder, making polystyrene boxes for food and blow molded boxes for collectibles and other packaging products.
